Though social media played a useful role in dissemination of information and acquiring knowledge, people, particularly youngsters, must be careful in using it since it was fraught with many risks, said G. Valli, Vice-Chancellor, Mother Teresa Women’s University, here on Monday.
Delivering the convocation address at the Anna University’s Regional Campus in Madurai, she said that imprudent sharing of personal information on social media could lead to stealing and misuse of information, cyber bullying and a number of other issues.
Encouraging the students to never stop learning, she said that graduating students in the first few years of their career must focus more on what they were learning instead of what they were earning.
She appealed to the students to take additional responsibility to address societal problems such as like poverty, corruption and inequality, apart from ensuring success in their career.
Highlighting that rapid economic development was necessary to address poverty, she said that it must, however, be done in a sustainable manner without affecting the environment. She asked the students to apply their engineering knowledge to improve use of renewable energy sources.
M.K. Surappa, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, presided over the convocation and handed over degrees to the students.
According to a university statement, 718 students from the Regional Campus in Madurai and University Colleges in Dindigul and Ramanathapuram received their degrees.
