Candidate loses co-op poll, alleges irregularities

It was earlier put off following clashes

After a pro-AIADMK candidate was declared as the chairman at a primary agricultural cooperative credit society poll, his rivals had a heated argument with the Returning Officer alleging irregularities on Saturday.

During the poll held at a co-op in Melanambipuram near Ettayapuram, 11 directors, who were elected a year ago, voted for the post of the chairman.

High Court ruling

The poll, which was earlier put off following clashes between two sides, was held on Saturday as per the directions of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

Over 100 personnel, led by Vilathikulam police Inspector Padmanbapillai, provided heavy security during the poll held from 12.30 to 1 p.m.

Following the poll, Returning Officer Murugan declared A. Dhanavathi as the winner.

Following the declaration, his rival, Usha Nandhini and her supporters had an argument with the Returning Officer.

Usha Nandhini claimed that eight of the members were on her side and questioned how Mr. Dhanavathi was declared the winner by the official.

She said that a case would be filed at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court against the result.

Meanwhile, the police escorted the official safely outside.
