The kidneys, liver and corneas of a 55-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead at Government Rajaji Hospital, was donated on Saturday.
Hospital sources said that the woman, K. Ammapillai, a resident of Usilampatti, was admitted to GRH on Monday night after she met with an accident while travelling on a two-wheeler. Despite treatment, her condition worsened and was declared brain dead on Friday night.
Dean D. Maruthupandian said that the woman’s daughter, son-in-law and brother, who were with her at the hospital, were consulted by the hospital’s grief counsellor S. Venkatesh. As they readily agreed to donate her organs, the procedures stipulated by the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) was immediately initiated.
The organs were harvested from the woman on Saturday morning by a team of doctors. The hospitals to receive the organs were identified as per TRANSTAN norms.
Accordingly, one of the kidneys and the pair of corneas were donated to patients at GRH. The kidney was immediately transplanted to a man, aged around 35, from Koodal Nagar in Madurai.
Another kidney was donated to a patient at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital while the liver was donated to a private hospital in Tiruchi.
Dr. Maruthupandian appreciated the family of the donors and the team of doctors at GRH, which included P. Raja from the Department of Urology, R. Arul from the Department of Nephrology and Evelyn Aseervatham from the Institute of Anaesthesiology.
He noted that this was the second time that organs from a brain dead person were harvested at the GRH.
