Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a demonstration against the Madurai Corporation on Saturday condemning it for not having carried out development works properly.

Party leader Sasiraman said that despite 28 new wards being added to the Corporation a few years back, no steps had been taken to provide basic facilities for people there.

“The roads are pothole-ridden and mosquito menace is rampant in many areas. No adequate steps have been taken to redress these problems,” he said.

The cadres raised slogans and alleged that the apathy of Corporation officials had resulted in the neglect of many developmental works.

Alleging that funds were being misused by many officials, the cadres demanded that the people be provided with adequate infrastructure.

“While the Smart Cities Mission can bring benefits to the city, the State government should ensure that the funds are utilised properly to this effect. Works carried out under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, including numerous storm water channels built across the city, are lying in disuse due to poor planning,” Mr. Sasiraman noted.
