Bathing banned at two ghats during Maha Pushkaram

Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department has banned bathing at two bathing ghats here during Tamirabharani Maha Pushkaram to be held from October 11 to 22.

In an order, HR&CE Joint Commissioner A.T. Paranjothi said the ancient bathing ghat near Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Kurukkuthurai could not be easily accessed through the narrow stretches by a large number of devotees coming for the event.

Since the event was organised during the northeast monsoon, the Tamirabharani would swell and ensuring the safety of the pilgrims would be very difficult. Hence, bathing at the ghat near the temple during Maha Pushkaram was banned.

A similar ban had been imposed on bathing at Pillaiyankattalai bathing ghat at Kokkirakulam in view of the narrow stretches leading to the spot and the dangerous and deep whirlpools near the spot.

Mr. Paranjothi also said the ‘urchavar’ should not be taken in procession during the Maha Pushkaram, which was against the holy scriptures.
