May 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - Madurai:

In a bid to raise awareness among bankers and field functionaries of the National Urban Livelihood Mission, Madurai Corporation and District Lead Bank organised a sensitisation programme.

Among the seven components of the NULM, the Self-Employment Programme and Support to Urban Street Vendors programme are currently implemented in Madurai city on a bigger scale.

“Through the programme, we want to dispel any hesitation that bankers and financiers might have towards offering financial assistance to persons who wish to start small ventures under the SEP. The SEP will greatly contribute towards the uplift of the livelihood of the urban poor,” said Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan.

Mr. Kathiravan also released the training handbook and inaugurated a display of products manufactured by women’s self-help groups.

V. Rajendran, Assistant Project Director, NULM, said that 656 SHGs were functioning with the support of the NULM in the city limits.
