Armed gang robs 1.25 kg of gold, cash near Kottampatti

An armed gang robbed an employee of a private gold finance company of over 1.25 kg of gold and ₹90,000 on Tiruchi-Madurai highway near Kottampatti on Wednesday night.

Police said that M. Michaelraj, 30, of Usilampatti, along with two others, was returning from Villupuram with the valuables in a car. When the car was crossing Ayyapatti junction under Kottampatti police station limits, another car that was following them dashed against their vehicle.

Five armed men, who got down from the car, threatened them to part with the valuales. One of them attacked Michaelraj with a machete and he sustained injuries on his forehead.

After pulling all the three out of the car, the gang sped away with both the vehicles. Upon being alerted, the Kottampatti police found Michaelraj’s car which was abandoned at Pathinettu Sukkampatti few hours later. However, the valuables were missing from the car.

“The car was found abandoned at Pathinettu Kukkampatti few hours later,” Superintendent of Police V. Baskaran said. However, the valuables inside the car were missing.

The SP said that the employees had flouted some of the security norms of the finance company. “They were not supposed to travel in the night while carrying valuables. Besides, they should not stop the vehicle mid-way,” the SP said.

The police said that though the complainant said that the other car had dashed against their vehicle, there was not much dent on the vehicle.

Even as the special teams were on the lookout for the accused, the police have not ruled out the role of insider’s hand in the robbery.
