MADURAI
A public interest litigation petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday sought equal opportunities to differently abled persons in appointment to the post of notary in the State.
The petitioner, K. R. Raja from Madurai, said though the Centre and State had introduced various provisions for the benefit of the differently abled, including those with ‘benchmark disabilities,’ there were lacunae in the implementation of the provisions.
Sections 33 and 34 of The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, specifically called for identification and reservation in appointments in government establishments for the differently abled. Many differently abled people had completed their graduation in law and were struggling to get jobs, he said.
Recently, a notification was issued calling for eligible candidates for appointment to the post of notary, the petitioner said, and sought a direction to the authorities to consider the differently abled candidates for the post.
A Division Bench of Justices M. M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar directed notice to the Ministry of Law and Justice and adjourned the case for further hearing.
