Antisocials hack couple running eatery

Traders down shutters in protest at Suththamalli

Condemning the attempt to murder a couple, who were running an eatery at Suththamalli near here, on Tuesday evening, traders of this hamlet downed shutters of their business establishments on Wednesday demanding the arrest of four antisocials who unleashed the attack.

Police said Sabhari (25) of Viswanatha Nagar near Suththamalli bought six packets of biryani from the shop of Zakhir Hussein, 54, at Suththamalli intersection on Tuesday evening. When Mr. Hussein told him that he did not have adequate number of chicken pieces for six parcels, Sabhari reportedly agreed to it and bought the biryani.

However, he and his friends, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, came back to the eatery and picked up a heated argument with Mr. Zakhir and his wife Bhanu (45) for not giving them biryani with adequate number of chicken pieces. They also attacked Mr. Zakhir and Ms. Bhanu with sickles, in which the couple sustained grievous injuries.

While Mr. Zakhir, who suffered a cut injury on the head, lost four fingers in the attack, his wife also sustained a deep cut in the head and lost a finger. They also hacked him on his right thigh before escaping on bikes. The couple are now undergoing treatment at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

The traders closed down over 300 shops on Wednesday. Though senior police officials persuaded the traders to give up their protest, they were firm on their decision.

“After suffering loss in the teashop he was running at Palayamkottai, Mr. Zakhir opened this eatery at Suththtamalli intersection only 10 months ago in a shop taken on lease. Unfortunately an innocent trader and his wife have been hacked. Our protest will continue until the antisocials are arrested,” the traders said.
