AMMK’s poll preparations move into top gear in Tirunelveli

The outfit is trying to woo voters of all communities

Even as the AIADMK and the DMK are busy handpicking their candidates for Tirunelveli Lok Sabha seat , the AMMK, led by T.T.V. Dhinakaran, has almost completed its preliminary work after identifying its candidate and holding talks with leaders of the communities having significant presence in the constituency.

Though the AMMK is closer to the hearts of Thevar voters, particularly among the electorate below the age of 45, Mr. Dhinakaran is keen on winning the trust of other communities, particularly the voters from Dalit, Nadar, Yadava and Muslim communities.

As per the data available here, Tirunelveli constituency has 3.81 lakh Nadar voters, 2.74 lakh Dalit voters, 2.11 lakh Thevar voters, 1.54 lakh Pillai voters, 1.54 lakh Muslim voters, 1.40 lakh Yadava voters and 2.35 lakh other voters.

After completing his meeting with Thevar community leaders, he, during the last four visits to the district, has met leaders of these four major communities with the promise that the AMMK candidate would always be a person acceptable and accessible to all of them.

“Most of the political parties have the culture of nominating persons only from Thevar community as district secretary or president of their Tirunelveli district unit. However, the AMMK, reposing faith in ‘Kallur’ Velayudham of Yadava community, has nominated him as Tirunelveli urban district secretary. This gesture has won the goodwill of the community,” says a senior party leader. The AMMK, by fielding a Nadar candidate, plans to harvest the votes from this community also.

“Our leader has already established contacts with Thevar leaders, who have pledged to work for the party’s candidate. By accommodating the Social Democratic Party of India, he tries to woo the Muslim voters. He has established contacts with the leaders of Dalit outfits and the discussions have yielded excellent results,” he says.

In this backdrop, the AMMK has planned to field former Radhapuram MLA S. Michael Rayappan. When he was fielded as DMDK candidate in Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency in 2009, he polled 94,562 votes (Alangulam: 15,797; Tirunelveli: 13,917; Ambasamudram: 17,693; Palayamkottai: 12,155; Nanguneri: 16,022; Radhapuram: 18,949).
