St. John Ambulance Brigade of Southern Railway conducted a rescue drill as part of the valedictory function of its three-day annual training camp here on Thursday.
The exercise was coordinated by its Assistant Commissioner G. Manikandan. Several wings of the Disaster Rescue and Relief Team displayed their state of preparedness to attend to emergencies. They enacted a drill wherein a bomb blast was reported in an air-conditioned railway coach. Immediately on receiving the information, the Disaster Rescue and Relief Team rushed to the spot.
Amid smoke and fire emanating from the coach, the search team comprising fire-fighters put out the flames. Later, the bomb detection and disposal squad made a thorough check for any remnant explosives inside the coach.
Once the BDDS and the firemen gave a signal, the rescue team started breaking the glass panes of the air-conditioned coach. The rescue team personnel later entered the coach and started bringing out the injured one by one.
Separate mobilisation counters were kept wherein the injured, according to the nature of injuries, were shifted for medical attention. The injured were classified into those who had fallen unconscious, those with bleeding injuries and those with fracture and burns.
Dog squad
After the rescue of the injured was completed, dog squad entered the coach again to sniff out victims, if any, caught under the coach.
The medical team attended to the victims and they were sent to hospitals one by one based on their medical emergency. Chief Medical Director of Southern Railway T. Anjaiah released the new logo of Disaster Rescue and Relief Team of SJAB on the occasion and it was received by Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg.
State Chairman of SJAB Vadivel Mukundan, Additional Divisional Railway Manager RVB Babu were present.
