‘Allegation that SC students were made to clean toilets true’

Disciplinary proceedings initiated against Headmaster, teacher: DEO

After allegation that Scheduled Caste students were made to clean toilets in a government school, the District Education Officer, Pudukkottai, submitted before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday that the allegation turned out to be true.

The DEO, S. Rajendran, in his counter affidavit submitted that an inquiry was conducted following the allegation against Headmaster Muthusamy and a teacher, Bhuvaneshwaran, of the Panchayat Union Middle School in Valaikurichi.

He said a video clipping of the incident surfaced and with the allegation against them turning out to be true, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against them.

However, with regard to the allegation that caste identity of the students was being revealed indirectly through their identity cards, the DEO said it was not intentional. It was alleged that though the streets where the students were residing did not have caste names, the streets were identified by the caste names of the predominant groups of residents.

The DEO said the mistake was rectified and fresh identity cards were issued to the students with the actual names of the streets.

A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and R. Tharani adjourned the case for further hearing. The court was hearing the petition filed by S. Shanmugam of Karambakudi in Pudukkottai district, a functionary of Periyar Ambedkar Makkal Kazhagam

The petitioner alleged that identity cards of the students of the Panchayat Union Middle School in Valaikurichi indirectly revealed their caste identity and sought a direction to remove the names. He also alleged that since the conservancy worker engaged by the school had quit work, SC students were asked to clean toilets.
