A ruling party functionary K. Ayyappan (25) was arrested on Monday on the charge of assaulting a Corporation sweeper, P. Karikalan (22), here on Sunday night.
The police said Karikalan had accidentally hit Ayyappan with the handle of a broomstick while sweeping near Kattabomman statue at around 10.30 p.m. on Sunday.
Ayyappan is the secretary of MGR Youth Wing of ward 78.
A wordy quarrel erupted between them, and it led to fisticuff. In the melee, Karikalan sustained an injury on his head.
Based on a complaint lodged by Karikalan, the Tideer Nagar police registered a case against Ayyappan for using abusive language, hurting and under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
