Among the 10 urban civic bodies in the State, Madurai Corporation is the first to hail the verdict in the disproportionate wealth case against All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa.
Convening a special meeting of councillors here on Thursday, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa, who was in the chair, showered encomiums on the leader for her “perseverance in the political arena”. “The judgement has only proved that our enemies (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and others) are in the wrong again. They had levelled baseless charges against our leader. Truth has prevailed and prayers by lakhs of party cadres and the public did not go in vain,” he said.
Soon the State would witness more development and in the coming years, Tamil Nadu would be on the top in all spheres, Mr. Chellappa said.
In the absence of DMK members and the lone CPI (M) councillor, the special meeting virtually turned out to be a platform for every councillor to sing paeans in awe of Ms. Jayalalithaa — all in the presence of officials led by Corporation Commissioner Kathiravan.
While a few councillors lashed out at the DMK in choicest words for defaming Ms. Jayalalithaa, others did not forget to sing hosannas for Karnataka High Court Judge Kumarasamy for the ‘landmark’ verdict.
The 90-minute meeting witnessed humour and display of emotions — speakers wept while uttering their leader’s (Jayalalithaa) name. “You must live long Amma…” said 70-year-old AIADMK councillor Muthukaruppan and fired salvo on DMK leaders. A few others trained their guns on the MDMK, DMDK and the PMK.
Interestingly, none spoke a word against the Congress or the BJP.
