With Edappadi K Palaniswami forming the government after nine days of political drama and confusion, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres welcomed the new development by bursting crackers and distributing sweets to the public here on Thursday.

The cadre, including a handful of women, started gathering outside the party’s urban district unit office on Panangal Road since 4 p.m. They waited patiently till the swearing in commenced at Chennai and as the information reached here, they started hailing former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and party general secretary V.K. Sasikala.

The cadres were led by party district unit presidium chairman Duraipandian, former Mayor (in charge) K. Thiraviyam and MGR Mandram functionary M.S. Pandian.

The cadres also stopped buses and distributed sweets to the passengers. However, very few former Corporation councillors of the party were present. Among them were K. Jayavel, S.D. Jayabalan, A. Suganthi, M. Dass and M. Kesavapandiammal.

The party workers shouted slogans against former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and described him as “traitor.”

Mr. Pandian exuded confidence that the present dispensation would follow the ideals of Jayalalithaa and carry out welfare measures for the people of Tamil Nadu.

On Tuesday, when the Supreme Court announced the verdict in the Disproportionate Assets case in which Jayalalithaa was found guilty and Ms. Sasikala and her two relatives were convicted, the office wore a deserted look.
