Construction of additional toilets in schools for boys and girls will have to be completed by January as per instructions from the Department of School Education.

Director of School Education V.C. Rameswara Murugan, who conducted a review meeting through videoconferencing facility from Chennai with the district school authorities here on Friday, sought particulars about action taken to increase number of toilets in schools.

When the district officials detailed him on availability of toilets, Mr. Murugan asked for completion of toilet construction work in all government high and higher secondary schools by January. Official sources told The Hindu that 22 schools in the district had no toilets, and in 10 schools the number of toilets was inadequate for boys.

Toilet construction in government schools will be taken up with the support of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), MLA fund, voluntary organisations and Airports Authority of India.

Details of number of urinals and toilets gathered from each school during a survey in the last three days was analysed and the toilet requirement of each school assessed by a special team.

In Madurai district, there are 196 government high and higher secondary schools, including Kallar, Adi Dravidar, Corporation, Social Welfare and government-run schools, 116 government-aided schools and 188 matriculation schools.

Mr. Murugan also reviewed implementation of government schemes for school students, teacher training programmes, education assistance, bringing back school dropouts to the education mainstream and distribution of laptops.

G. Krishnamurthy, District Educational Officer, Madurai Educational District and Loganathan, DEO in-charge, Melur Educational District, were present at the review meeting.
