An acid attack victim, who had been undergoing treatment in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for nearly seven months, died on Saturday.

Police said M. Ramalakshmi (28) of Vannarpet in Palayamkottai, who was working in a mobile phone showroom, befriended auto driver Chinnadurai alias Chinnaraj (28) of Seevalaperi when he would visit his elder sister living near Ramalakshmi’s house. When Chinnadurai took Ramalakshmi to a temple near Kalakkad in his auto on November 7 last, he attempted to sexually assault her.

As Ramalakshmi resisted the attempt, Chinnadurai allegedly threw acid on the woman, in which she suffered acid burns on the body and also on the eyes. She was undergoing treatment in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where she died on Saturday.

Following this, the Kalakkad police have altered the attempt-to-murder case against Chinnadurai as a case of murder.
