Children from a government school in Othakadai enthralled the gathering with their ‘silambam’ performance at the 73rd Independence Day celebration at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday.

The celebration began with the Administrative Judge of the High Court Bench M. Sathyanarayanan garlanding the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the court premises. He hoisted the national flag and inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at a parade presented by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and police personnel.

The jawans performed ‘silambam,’ a traditional martial arts form, Bhangra dance and displayed basic combat techniques. The jawans, both men and women, also displayed the Israeli self-defence technique of Krav Maga.

To bring a comic relief to the crowd, a CISF jawan performed combat techniques dressed as a clown and put up a goofy show, much to the amusement of the crowd, particularly children. The jawans stepped up their daredevilry by jumping through rings of fire. In their final act, the jawans formed a human pyramid and waved the national flag from atop.

Principal District Judge A. Nazeema Banu hoisted the national flag on the district court campus. The judges planted 20 saplings on the court campus. In a noble gesture, the Judges visited Rojavanam, a shelter for the urban poor in Uthangudi and distributed bedsheets, tiffin boxes and also served meals to the inmates. The judges planted 10 saplings at the shelter.
