Karaikudi: The Madras University in the men’s section and the Alagappa University in the women’s section emerged as winners in the Tamil Nadu State-level inter University Hockey (Men & Women) Tournament 2016-17 held here from January 27 to 29.

This tournament was organized by Alagappa University, in association with Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. SRM University and Alagappa University won the 2nd and 3rd places respectively in the men’s section. In the women’s section, the Madras University and the Madurai Kamaraj University were placed in the 2nd and 3rd places respectively, a release from the University has said.

In all, 342 players from 12 Universities, including 216 men and 126 women, constituting 12 men’s and seven women’s teams participated in the tournament. Prof Subbiah, Vice-Chancellor, Alagappa University distributed prizes to the winners.

Addressing the function, he said taking part seriously in this kind of competitions would be an excellent training to prepare themselves for participation at the national level competitions. Players should develop keen interest in their chosen games and that alone would lead them to achieve great success, he added.

Speaking at the function, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries Board G. Baskaran, said the state government has initiated a number of schemes for the development of sports and games in the state. He exhorted the students to make use of all the facilities and bring laurels to the state by taking part in national and international events.

Mr P.R. Senthilnathan, AIADMK MP advised the students to concentrate not only in their studies, but also in sports and games to keep the body and mind in good health. Enormous employment potential was available for sportspersons, he said and called upon the students to develop their skills in the chosen field.
