Stress laid on evils of tobacco

Southern Railway's Madurai Division observed World No Tobacco Day by organising a seminar on ‘Evils of tobacco' and a quiz programme on the ‘Abuses of tobacco' at the Railway Hospital here on Monday.

Bhuvaneshwari, Medical Officer, Madurai Corporation, in her keynote address, said that smoking was the root cause for lung cancer, cancer of the upper respiratory track, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

G. Sahoo, Senior Divisional Medical Officer, presided over the programme and also distributed prizes. P.R. Ganesh, Senior Divisional Officer (Health and Family Welfare) delivered the welcome address. V. Gopalakrishnan, Senior Divisional Extension Educator, conducted the quiz programme.
