Accidents are often occurring due to the slow pace of digging work on the wide road leading to the integrated bus stand at Maattuthavani for laying a median, police said.
In the early hours of Sunday, a goods lorry proceeding towards Melur from Madurai overturned in front of the entrance to the Industrial Estate Flower Market area, hitting vehicular movement for sometime. Four days ago, a share-auto driver hit the construction materials lying on the road. The vehicle overturned causing minor injuries to him. There were many examples of motorists' falling in the middle of the road, especially in the night, as street lights were absent, police added.
According to traffic police, the median work is being carried out by Highways Department. Though the exact reason for the sluggish pace of work was not known, an official from the department claimed that the works were progressing as per schedule. The median was to regulate vehicular movement, he maintained. However, road users had a different story to tell.
By laying medians in different shapes and sizes in the city, motorists are a confused lot.
On K.K. Nagar Main Road, the authorities had laid concrete medians, while on the busy Panagal Road stretch leading to Goripalayam they had demolished the concrete medians and installed mobile barricades.
In Anna Nagar Main Road too, there are different types of medians leading to the over bridge towards Teppakulam, Subramanian, a taxi driver , said.
“What is baffling many motorists' is the sudden disappearance of barricades on key stretches such as West Veli Street,” he added.
Commissioner of Police P. Balasubramanian told The Hindu on Monday that medians were essential on select stretches as it would prevent road accidents and regulate vehicle flow.
He warned that wreckers would be pressed into service to remove vehicles which were parked in “No parking” areas.
