SI injured in stone pelting

Uneasy calm prevailed in Uthapuram village near here following a clash between two groups of the same caste group on Thursday evening. A sub-inspector of police and two Armed Reserve constables sustained simple injuries in stone pelting.

Madurai Rural police said that the clash erupted between the groups following an altercation over cleaning the premises of the Muthalamman Mariamman Temple. An SI, identified as Subburaj, and two policemen were injured in the stone pelting that followed. The Madurai Rural SP, M. Manohar, is camping in the village. Though no case had been registered, the police said that the situation was under control. Police have been deployed in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident.
