Public interest litigation against cash for votes

Updated - September 16, 2016 10:15 am IST - MADURAI:

A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the Law Commission to suggest comprehensive measures, including amendments to electoral laws, to prevent distribution of cash for votes and a consequential direction to the Centre to implement the suggestions within a timeframe.

K.K. Ramesh, Managing Trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation, a private body, filed the petition in which he had also sought for an interim direction to the Election Commission to declare as invalid the recent elections held for 232 Assembly constituencies in the State and suspend the House until final orders were passed in his case to amend electoral laws. Claiming that it had become a common practice for major political parties to pay Rs.200 to Rs.10,000 per voter during the elections, he alleged that the Election Commission had failed to control bribing. He also stated that most of the contestants filed false claims of electoral expenses.
