Pongal mela on Sunday

Kadambavanam Cultural Centre near here is gearing up for a Pongal Mela on Sunday. Festivities depicting Bhogi, Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kannum Pongal would be presented in a rural setting.

According to a press release, the festivities will start at 8 a.m. with ceremonial puja at Kadambavana Sundarar shrine. Pongal will be cooked in the presence of guests. It will be followed by Mullaipari Kummi before the Veera Ayyanar within the temple complex. Mattu pongal will also be celebrated. The rituals include detailed explanations for the benefit of overseas guests. A makeshift crafts bazaar would be set up with handicrafts and jute products, paintings, palm leaf and banana fibre products, pottery and cane weaving, fancy items, ethnic jewellery and sungadi sari stalls.

Traditional games with a Kabbadi match, Uri adithal (mud pot breaking ) and ‘Vazhukku maram' besides bow and arrow, balloon shooting, games for kids, ladies has been scheduled. Bullock cart ride, parrot astrology and traditional folk dances and songs will add to the gaiety.

The highlight of this year's mela will be a parade of fighting bulls, sheep and cocks. Guests will be treated to a traditional breakfast and a grand festive lunch, served the traditional way on banana leaves complete with Thamboolam.
