JUST A CLICK WILL DO: Superintendent of Police, Madurai Rural, M. Manohar launching the training programme for police personnel in the city.

The Madurai Rural Police have launched new software using which particulars of habitual offenders involved in criminal offences could be accessed and downloaded easily by the personnel at a faster pace.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police M. Manohar said that the new system, ‘Crime criminal tracking networking system,' (CCTNS) is being taught to the police personnel at the station level — station writers, assistant station writers, police personnel attending court duties, among others. In the first phase, about 240 police personnel would be trained, scheduled for five days for each batch. For the training programme, the government had allocated Rs. one lakh for resource persons and to meet the overheads.

Explaining the salient features, Mr. Manohar said that in the conventional method, maintaining records was not only cumbersome but also took time to gather inputs about a particular accused involved in a criminal case.

In the new system, the software enabled a policeman to have access to all information about the accused, right from the day he committed the offence in any part of the district or other places, which would have been recorded in the police stations.

Further, the crime particulars and sections registered, the names of the witnesses, the place of occurrence among other details would be available. Police personnel undergoing training at the Armed Reserve police campus since Monday said that the programme would be useful for them as in the enhanced network, data of criminals and the offences committed by them were available comprehensively. In the event of a crime being reported from any corner of the district, particulars of the date of imprisonment, the date on which he/she was released on bail among other details were also there, they said.

Additional DSP Mayilvaganan, DSPs Vijayaraghunathan and Govindaraj, among others, participated.
