Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa, on Friday, inspected the facilities being provided by the Corporation for the conduct of jallikattu at Avaniyapuram on the Pongal Day, January 15.
Along with the Deputy Mayor, R. Gopalakrishnan, and officials, he inspected the venue on the Avaniyapuram-Tirupparankundram road.
This was the first time the Corporation will be making arrangements for the jallikattu since Avaniyapuram municipality has been included with the Madurai Corporation.
The Mayor enquired with the Corporation Assistant Commissioner (Zone 4), A. Palanichamy, about the conduct of the event.
The officials have set up double barricading for nearly 250 metres to keep spectators at a safe distance from the bulls.
‘Vadivasal'
A ‘vadivasal' has been set up with trunks of palymrah and coconut palms through which the bulls would be allowed to enter the makeshift ground on the road.
Coir of coconut sheath would be laid on the road to protect the man and the animal from getting hurt.
The Corporation would also deploy a medical team to provide first aid to the bull-tamers in case they get hurt. Ambulances would also be kept ready to rush them to the Government Rajaji hospital for further treatment, City Health Officer Subramanian said. Water and mobile toilet facilities would also be provided.
