The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) had begun to train mentally disabled in honey extraction.

A group of ten residents of the Chellamuthu Gardens at Alagarkoil here, which is run for those with mental disabilities by M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation, have already been imparted preliminary training with ten bee colonies installed at the site.

This venture will also boost their self-confidence apart from providing a source of income, M.T.Wakode, Divisional Director, Madurai Division, KVIC, told The Hindu here on Sunday.

Apart from keeping the patients occupied, this initiative could also reduce the paralytic attacks. Bee stings could treat knee and joint pains and ‘apitherapy’ was very popular in the African continent, he said.

“The KVIC is going to organise a week-long training programme for them, which will entail stipends and certificates. Two of our officers have been deputed to the institute to work on the logistics,” he said.

According to K.S.P.Janardhan Babu, Assistant Director of the Trust, those who had taken the initial training were responding positively. The trust was also planning to rope in their family members and self-help groups in this venture as it could be a source of income.

“The trust is already giving training in vocations such as candle-making, bakery products, housekeeping products like bleaching powder, dairy farming and vermicompost. Bee-keeping will be a valuable addition to our programmes,” he said.

Mr.Janardhan Babu said that the KVIC was ready to extend marketing assistance to the Trust. Plans were afoot to promote the medicinal values of honey in a larger scale, he added.
