Adi Dravida People Movement’s Coordination Committee has demanded a CBI inquiry into the multi-crore granite scam. At its State-level meeting held in Madurai recently, the district representatives and presidents from across the State placed a resolution to this effect.
It said the scam had been taking place for more than two decades since 1985, during this time 15 Indian Administrative Officers have served the district, but two Collectors, C. Kamaraj and N. Mathivanan, have been targeted for enquiry just because they happen to be Dalits.
The Movement has no second thought in the fact that people who have committed offences should be prosecuted. However, given the enormity of the scam and the duration, the government should conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry because both the Collectors served in the district only for a short period of time, said its president M. Muthuramalingam. It has been reported that during the period 1993-1996 licences were given to almost 75 quarries, but there has been no action against IAS officers who had served during this time. The Movement demands that only a CBI inquiry would be an “unbiased” enquiry and will bring the whole truth to light.
