The district administration has launched career guidance programme for the benefit of SSLC and Plus Two students, accommodated in government hostels run by the Department of Backward Classes and Denotified Communities Welfare.

Inaugurating the programme, organised by the department here on Tuesday, Collector S. Natarajan said the programme was aimed at educating and guiding the students, especially those who would complete SSLC and Plus Two this academic year, on deciding their career.

Students who would clear SSLC this year should apply their mind and choose their subjects while joining Plus One instead of selecting them at random.

Similarly, those who would complete Plus Two examinations should weigh all the pros and cons before selecting professional courses.

Pointing out that there were plenty of opportunities for the students to decide their professional courses, he said they should join the courses of their interest instead of succumbing to parental and other external pressure.

Under the programme, the students were enlightened on the job opportunities in various spheres, including civil engineering, agriculture and banking sector. Apart from medical and engineering courses, there were many emerging fields with huge job opportunities, the Collector said.

From government hostels

SSLC and Plus Two students, accommodated in 55 government hostels run by the department in the district, and college students, staying in five government hostels, attended the programme.

District Revenue Officer M. Ali Akbar, Backward Classes Welfare Officer Muruganandam and Assistant Director (Employment and Training) Abubacker Sithik attended the programme.
