A two-year-old child at Amathur in Virudhunagar district was done to death, allegedly by the 15-year-old son of his neighbour, police said.
Acting on the parents' complaint that their child was missing, police launched an investigation. Suspecting the involvement of the neighbour's son, who was also missing, they launched a hunt and secured him. Based on his confession, police found the body of Jothi Sankaran from the suspect's house. It was tied in a gunny bag, Inspector General of Police (south zone) S.S. Krishnamoorthy told TheHindu .
“Whether the accused is mentally disturbed… is being examined,” he said. The body has been sent for post-mortem and a case of murder registered. A senior police officer said the boy had committed a similar crime last year and had been arrested. Recalling the incident, police said he had sold a walkman to his friend. As the friend failed to pay the balance amount of Rs.150, he killed him.
