A group of fishermen from Vembar in the district laid siege to the Office of Assistant Director of Fisheries here on Friday urging the officials to take immediate and stern action against the fishermen using banned purse seine nets.

Sit-in dharna

Led by Jesuraj, around 100 fishermen from Vembar staged a sit-in dharna on the premises of the Office of Assistant Director of Fisheries here for a while.

The protesting fishermen said fish breeding off the coast of Vembar had been seriously affected as some of the fishermen from their hamlet were using the banned purse seine nets that would harvest even the juveniles.

Even as the agitation was going on, Joint Director of Fisheries Reena Selvi and Assistant Director N. Balasaraswathi held talks with the protesting fishermen and assured them that they would take action against those using purse seine nets, if a proper complaint was registered with the officials.

Complaint filed

Subsequently, the fishermen filed a complaint with the officials and left the spot.

State general secretary of Youth Congress S.M. Sahayaraj, Communist Party of India secretary S.P. Gnanasekar, district treasurer Paramasivan and Vembar area Youth Congress president Bergin participated in the sit-in dharna.
