Team work and dedicated expertise of surgeons and anaesthetists at Vadamalayan Hospitals has made life better and meaningful for 98-year-old Narayanasami.

A fortnight ago, the patient had a fall in his farm at his native Ettayapuram in Thoothukudi district. He was unable to move as he suffered a fracture on his right hip. The pain and immobility made life miserable.

Apprehending bedsore, his relative, who was a staff nurse, decided to admit him in Vadamalayan Hospitals.

A team comprising orthopaedic surgeon M. Baskar, anaesthetist Anbarasu and other support staff successfully performed the surgery. “It was done in about 30 minutes,” the doctors told a press conference here on Wednesday.

Considering age, most of the patients, or their relatives, might not prefer surgery, but it would only add up to the problems, they said.

At 98, Narayanasami, had no ailments such as diabetes or BP. A bachelor, he carried two buckets of water on his own till he met with the accident. Very recently, he had been having problems in hearing. However, the hospital directors, V.Pappunathan and B.R.J. Kannan, were hopeful of rectifying it.

“We have the expertise and technology...the hearing would be made fine,” they added.

Dr. Baskar admitted that there were difficulties in performing surgeries on nonagenarians as the quality of bone might not be good. Similarly, post-operative complications might crop up. However, team work and cooperation from the patient played a key role in the operation’s success.

Mr. Narayanasami was walking with a support. But in a matter of a week or fortnight, he should be totally fit and able to do his routine without any help, he said.

Commending the team, Hospital MD V. Pugalagiri said the patient would be under observation at Vadamalayan Sugantham Residential Care for a few more days as post-operative care was equally important.
