Ninety-six sovereigns of gold jewellery and cash were stolen in three different house break-ins in the city and suburbs.
While the victims in all the three incidents were elderly people, one of them was an engineer retired from Public Works Department, from whose house 64.5 sovereigns of jewellery was stolen.
Police said G. Shanmugam, the 79-year-old retired engineer, residing along Old Natham Road, was away from home since Wednesday.
On his return on Friday, he reportedly noticed that somebody had gained entry into the house by breaking open a window on the rear side and decamped with 64.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹ 40,000 in cash. Tallakulam police have registered a case.
In another incident reported in Koodal Pudur police station limits, 27.25 sovereigns of gold jewellery was stolen from the house of M. Gnanasekaran (70), residing in Angayarkanni Nagar, on Thursday night. The theft had occurred when he went out after leaving the house locked for just a couple of hours.
The third incident was reported in Anna Nagar police station limits in which the victim was S. Mohandas, a 65-year-old advocate. According to the police, the culprits had gained entry into the house on Thursday night and stole four sovereigns of gold jewellery kept in a cupboard.
