950 kg banned tobacco products seized from godown

Police conducted surprise check at a godown in Tirunelveli Town on Thursday midnight and seized 950 kg of banned tobacco products.

Police have picked-up five persons, including the godown owner, in this connection for interrogation.

Police said a raid was conducted at the godown at Vaiyapuri Nagar in Tirunelveli Town around Thursday midnight after Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner N. Bhaskaran received information about banned tobacco products being stocked there so that it could be smuggled to other parts of the district, including Tenkasi.

When the police checked the warehouse, they found banned tobacco products packed in 15 bags, each weighing 50 kg, and another 20 bags, each weighing 10 kg. The entire consignment was seized.

During investigation, police found that one Gopalakrishnan was the owner of the godown. He and four others have been picked up for interrogation.
