A court here has awarded seven years’ rigorous imprisonment to a youth for attempting to rape a nine-year-old girl.

According to prosecution, Satish, 23, of Karunyapuram under Arukani police station limits tried to sexually assault the girl on March 25, 2014. As the girl screamed, the passers-by rushed to the spot, but Satish escaped. However, Arukani police arrested him based on a complaint filed by the girl’s parents.

Mahila Court Judge John R.D. Santhosham on Thursday awarded the jail term to Satish and imposed a fine of ₹ 25,000 on him.
