Farmers, members of public and non-governmental organisations are invited to take up renovation of irrigation tanks with due permission from the Government, Additional Secretary, Public Works Department, M. Balaji, said here today.
After inspecting various tanks that were being taken up for renovation under kudimaramthu scheme, Mr. Balaji, said that a total of 65 tanks in the district would be taken up for renovation works at a cost of ₹26.69 lakh.
Stating that Chief Minister, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, has instructed officials to complete the works by second week of September, he said that the works should be carried out in a transparent manner.
The objective of the scheme was to maintain waterbodies, increase groundwater resource, save rain water and improve the livelihood of farmers.
“The Chief Minister has instructed to maintain quality in execution of works and monitoring committees would be set up to monitor the quality,” he added.
Pointing out that the Chief Minister himself will inspect the works, he instructed the officials of Public Works Department to execute the work with special attention.
He said that the works will be executed through registered ayacutdars associations.
The officials should also ensure that at least 51% of the ayacutadars were part of the registered societies. While the government would provide 90% funds, the societies will have to make the remaining 10% contribution, he added.
The Additional Secretary also inspected Pandian tank in Vembakottai under Virudhunagar Vaippar Basin Division, Pannai Moondraippu tank and Tiruchuli tank in Tiruchuli under Madurai Gundar Basin Division, Pallimadam tank, Sennilaikudi tank, Alangulam tank and Velangudi tank.
Virudhunagar Collector A. Sivagnanam, District Revenue Officer K. Udhayakumar, Superintending Engineer, Vaippar Basin Circle, Virudhunagar, Gnanasekaran, and farmers took part in the meeting.
