MADURAI
Election officials seized 47 kg of gold jewels from a vehicle, which was proceeding from Madurai to Salem, at Iyer Bungalow here on Wednesday.
During a routine vehicle check, flying squad and static surveillance teams stopped a logistics vehicle on New Natham Road in the morning and found the gold jewellery in it.
The driver and two other occupants of the vehicle did not possess necessary documents for transporting the jewellery. They claimed that the ornaments were being sent to various jewellery shops in and around Salem.
The officials detained the vehicle and handed over the valuables to Income Tax department. The seized jewellery would be returned, if required documents were produced, officials said.
