Customs officials seized 350 grams of gold concealed in a baby cycle brought by a youth from Dubai at the Madurai airport on Thursday evening.

Customs source said that the passenger, Eswaran (21) of Theni, was stopped by the Assistant Commissioner, M. Chandrasekaran, on suspicion while passing through the green channel after alighting from the Dubai-Madurai spicejet aircraft.

When his luggage was scanned for the second time, they become more suspicious and dismantled the cycle.

The officials found a cylindrical gold ingot weighing 350 grams concealed in the cycle.

The youth, a construction worker, had gone to Dubai ten months back.

The youth claimed that an unknown person, claiming to be a co-passenger, had asked him to help book the luggage in his name, as he had too much luggage with him.

Later, he had told him that he could not travel with him, but the cycle could be collected at Madurai Airport.

As instructed by the Joint Commissioner of Customs, T.G. Venkatesh, the youth was being interrogated further.
