A total of 2,91,516 children under the age of five were administered polio vaccine in Madurai district on Sunday as part of the second phase of the intensified Pulse Polio immunisation programme.

Health Department officials said this was 92.6 % of the 3,14,802 children targeted in the district.

According to the officials, the coverage was 90.4 % in urban areas and 94.8 % in rural areas.

A statement said that 7,412 employees were deployed for the exercise.

Earlier, the campaign was inaugurated at a Community Health Centre in the city by Minister for Cooperation Sellur K. Raju in the presence of Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao and Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri.

Similarly, Revenue Minister R.B. Udhayakumar inaugurated the campaign at a PHC in Tirumangalam.
