A day after Shencottai witnessed clash between a section of Hindus and Muslims and subsequent attack on a few business establishments, the police arrested 20 persons from both sides in connection with the violence.

Armed with visuals and photos taken during the violence, the police identified the miscreants and started arresting them on Saturday. “The arrests are being made based on the proof we have and the impartial arrests will continue,” said a police officer.

Demanding the release of the arrested Hindus, around 200 persons laid siege to the Shencotttai Taluk office in the evening. However, the police and revenue officials told them that action had been taken against only those who had indulged in violence and not against innocent persons. However, they refused to disperse even after 6.30 p.m.

Meanwhile, 75 Vinayaka idols were immersed at Sankarankovil, Puliyangudi and Kadayanallur with heavy police protection.
