A total of 178 students were on Monday admitted to 13 postgraduate courses through the counselling introduced for the first time at Madurai Kamaraj University. Admissions could not be done for 11 other courses since the applicants were fewer than five.

Counselling for admissions to 24 courses – 22 courses did not have entrance examination for admission and two courses had State-level entrance examination – was conducted on the university premises. While every department handled its admissions individually till last year, the decision to conduct a single-window counselling to ensure transparency was taken after M. Krishnan took charge as Vice-Chancellor.

T. Dharmaraj, Professor and Head, Department of Cultural Studies, who coordinated the process, said that the seats in Tamil and English programmes, which had State-level entrance examinations, were completely filled. Similarly, he said, Commerce, French, Economics, and Journalism and Mass Communication courses had high demand with almost all the seats getting filled.

Sources in the university said that a decision was taken to conduct the admission process on Monday only if a particular courses had at least five applicants. The courses that did not have five applicants included Sociology, Sanskrit, Telugu and Religion and Philosophy. However, a senior university official said that the vacant seats could be filled till August 2019.
