There is a rise of 1.69 per cent in the number of voters in Madurai district, according to Collector L. Subramanian.

Releasing the final electoral rolls for the district here on Monday, he said that the total number of voters stood at 24,57,680 — 12,22,700 men, 12,34,893 women and 87 others.

This was higher by 40,924 voters than the draft electoral rolls released on October 15, 2014, when the total number was 24,16,756 voters.

The district comprises 10 Assembly constituencies — Melur, Madurai East, Sholavandan (Reserve), Madurai North, Madurai South, Madurai Central, Madurai West, Tirupparankundram, Tirumangalam and Usilampatti.

Compared to the last electoral roll, the number of voters had risen by 1.69 per cent now, he told reporters.

The officials received 69,703 applications from eligible voters between October 15 and November 10, 2014, requesting to include their names in the voter list ; 1,113 to delete names ; 11,491 to amend details; and 6,152 applications seeking change in address.

Out of the 69,703 applications, 68,013 were found eligible after scrutiny for inclusion. Dr. Subramanian said that a total of 27,089 names were deleted from the voter list after a random enumeration, in which it was found that voters had either died or had shifted residence. Among the applications received for inclusion of names, Madurai East received the maximum number of 10,351 applications, he said.

The Collector said that public can submit the relevant forms to effect any changes in the voter list from Tuesday
