MADURAI

Sixteen life convicts, mostly related to murder cases, were released from Madurai Central Prison on Saturday.

The release was done as part of Tamil Nadu government’s decision to release life convicts, who have served more than 10 years in prison, based on their good conduct as part of the birth centenary celebration of late Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.

The authorities in Madurai Central Prison said that another such life convict was released a week ago.

Stating that the prisoners are released in batches based on the verification process, the authorities said that a few more prisoners are likely to be released in the coming weeks.
