133 sovereigns of gold missing from van

Gold ornaments weighing 133 sovereigns and Rs. 1 lakh in cash were stolen from a group of tourists from Chennai who were on their way to their native place near Ettayapuram on May 9. Karuppayoorani police on Thursday registered the case.

The police said that the tourists had stopped their vehicle at the Sivaganga Road junction on the Ring Road here for having food. Later, they had stopped the vehicle near a tea shop at Ettayapuram. On their return, they found that four of their 13 bags went missing from the vehicle. The gold and cash belonged to S. Suresh, Saravanakumar and Prabhakar. Ettayapuram police declined to entertain the complaint.

Later, the complainants gave a petition to the Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Abhay Kumar Singh, who instructed Madurai police to register the complaint. Karuppayoorani police, after investigation, would transfer the case to the appropriate police station.

Held for embezzlement

The Commercial Crime Investigation Wing – CID, Madurai, on Friday arrested the secretary of the Forest Department Staff and other public Cooperative Housing Society, M. Tamilselvan, on a charge of misappropriation of society funds to the tune of Rs. 63 lakh.

The CCIW had registered a case against Tamilselvan on May 13 based on a complaint lodged by Rajendran, Deputy Registrar, Cooperative Housing Society. Mr. Rajendran had complained that Tamilselvan had prepared forged documents and got excess amount under the waiver of interest scheme announced by the Tamil Nadu government.

He had forged documents and got excess amount for the members and also included the names of ineligible members in the list of those eligible for interest waiver. The crime is said to have taken place in the 2012-13 fiscal.

Inspector of Police P.N. Rajesh nabbed the accused who was at large.
