In what is said to be sheer negligence by officials of a nationalised bank, an unidentified person stole ₹10 lakh kept in the cashier cabin after all the officials and employees left the bank unattended to participate in a retirement party on East Avani Moola Street on Monday.

The police said that only one person, sporting a cap, was seen sitting in the bank when all officials left the branch office on the ground floor for the third floor to attend the retirement function of a staff.

Though the incident had occurred at around 2.20 p.m., officials realised the missing of money only in the evening during their daily account verification.

They lodged a complaint with the Vilakkuthoon police station only late in the night.

A police source said that closed circuit television camera footage showed the cap-sporting person climbing over the glass partition of the cashier’s cabin and stealing the money. He had left the bank after employees had turned up.
