YouSpeak: ‘Whither pedestrian rights?’

April 26, 2013 02:10 am | Updated 02:10 am IST

Illegal road-side stalls being dismantled near Changapuzha Park comes as good news for people who would like to take a walk without getting hit by vehicles.

Firstly, there are no wide footpaths for people to walk, forcing them to take the road.

Walking on the road is not tension-free because we have to be on the lookout for vehicles. The vehicles too do not have enough space to ply.

Now with the roadside stalls being removed, there would be more space for pedestrians.

However, in reality, the space is being occupied by parked vehicles. If vehicles are allowed to use that space, then it would have been better to allow the stalls to operate as it would have helped the vendors earn their livelihood.

Therefore the same issue of space crops up again.

My suggestion is that the authorities either provide a wider footpath for people to walk on or make the area a no parking zone, keeping the stretch free of two- and four-wheelers.

I hope, with this letter, some action from the authorities would be forthcoming. And please do not wait until a judge passes a court order in this regard.
