KOCHI: The Nedumbassery police have launched a probe into a complaint by an elderly couple, who flew in here by a Qatar Airways flight early on Wednesday morning, that their baggage had been tampered with and materials worth nearly ₹3 lakh stolen.

Officials said the couple had lodged a complaint with Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) as well as the police on suspicion that the theft might have taken place while the bags were being shifted from the cargo deck to the conveyor belt.

In their complaint, Chacko Kurien and his wife Elly Kutty, who arrived from Florida via Doha, said valuable items including mobile phones, camera, perfumes, and chocolates were found missing in their baggage. The airport authorities handed over the complaint to the Central Industrial Security Force.

In their complaint, the couple, who arrived here at 2.50 a.m., charged that the airline had asked them not to lock the carriage bags.

Confirming that a case has been registered, the police said further action would be initiated after examining CCTV footage.
