Unpaid dues come in the way of cancer centre

October 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

Though the government has come out with an order to register the cancer society to begin the work on the out-patient department for the proposed cancer centre project here, more obstacles may come in the way of the project.

A letter received by the Principal of the Government Medical College from the Kerala Construction Corporation said there were dues amounting to Rs.83 lakh to be paid against the work taken up at the medical college when it was under the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE).

The Principal, Dr. Ashwini Kumar, said he had apprised the Health Department of the issue.

Health Secretary Dr. K. Ellangovan also visited the medical college on Monday.

The government had issued an order for the payment of Rs. 2.2-crore pending dues against the construction of the unfinished pay-ward building where the cancer centre’s OP would come up.

However, the new letter spoke of a security deposit and retention amount remaining with the CAPE that is yet to be released.

No instructions

Dr. Asha Thomas, Special Officer for Cancer Centre, told The Hindu that the implication of the new letter was unclear unless the government gave further instructions. The mandate so far was to take over the area for construction, she added.
