The trial run of the waste treatment plant, the first phase of the waste-to-energy plant to be set up at Willingdon Island, has been completed, claimed the project managers.

The plant has a capacity to treat 40 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste a day and can generate 24 lakh units of power annually.

The project is being implemented by Cochin Waste 2 Energy Company Private Limited and the technology was developed by team Sustain, a Kakkanad-based firm.

First plant

This is the first waste-to-energy plant in the private sector, according to its project managers.

“The project requires ₹6.5 crore for making it fully operational,” said Jose Dominic, chairman of Cochin Waste 2 Energy Company.

“In the second phase, heavy duty shredder, conveyor, gas cleaning up system and power plant will be installed. The project can be completed within six months if funds are available,” he said.

George Mathew, CEO, Team Sustain, said the power generated at the plant could be sold at a price of ₹7.5 to ₹8 a unit.
