Thaneerchal Park, a popular recreational spot for families in and around Thripunithura, is likely to be reopened soon. The facility, which was opened to the public in May 2015, has been lying closed for around six months now.

The Thripunithura municipality has finally managed to get a contractor for running and maintaining the park, which once used to be flocked by large number of visitors, especially on weekends.

After the contract lapsed in April, the municipality could not find a contractor to run the park, following which the facility was closed. Built around a lake in 2.5 acres, the park has boating facilities, play areas for children, amphitheatre, and a skating rink.

Now, the municipality has negotiated a maintenance contract at around ₹32 lakh, said O.V. Salim, vice chairman of Thripunithura municipality.

While the bureaucratic process of floating tenders took long, and since there were no takers initially, the municipality had to re-tender for a contract. But then came the floods.

The facility is likely to be opened by December 1. The delay is, perhaps, only in the final resetting of the park by the new contractor, he added. The park will be open for the public only in the evening. However, Mr. Salim said that if there was a public demand for opening the facility for morning walkers, it would be considered.
